Mango Kenya varieties, also known as mango cultivars, fall into 3 categories. To exist:-

Early Maturing: These mango cultivars ripen from November to mid-January. In this category we have Haden Mangoes, Ngowe Mangoes, Dodo Mangoes, Kensington Mangoes,, Zill Mangoes, and Apple Mangoes,

Middle Season: They ripen between mid-January and the end of February. In this category the types of mangoes we have Sabine mangoes, Peach mangoes, Sabre mangoes, Tommy Atkins mangoes, Matthias mangoes, Irwin mangoes, Van Dyke mangoes, Boribo mangoes and Smith mangoes.

Late Maturing - They ripen between late February and April. They include Kent Mangoes, Sensation Mangoes, Zillate Mangoes, and Keitt Mangoes,

In some parts of Kenya, especially on the coast, there is a second harvest, which takes place between May and August.

The ripening months of different cultivar categories may vary from region to region. For example, the Kibwezi mango season may differ from the central province mango season or the coastal mango season.

You should also keep in mind that most mango types tend to have biennial characteristics, producing bountiful harvests every other year. This means that you will have a good harvest one year and fewer mangoes the next.

Kent Mangoes - Mango Kenya

Kent mangoes have a mild, delicious taste that is enhanced by their juicy pulp which contains a limited amount of fibre. Because of their texture and flavor, Kent mangoes are great for juicing and drying, and are also used for baking (they make a great mango bread recipe!). Kent mangoes are dark green in color with a dark red color in a small portion of the fruit. The fruit itself is large and oval in shape.

Tommy Atkins - Mango Kenya

They have a slightly sweet taste with a firm, stringy, stringy pulp. Tommy Atkins has different shades on his medium to large oval bodies. The most important of these is the dark red color that covers most of the fruit.

Apple Mango - Mango Kenya

Apple Mango is native to the coast of Kenya. The fruits are medium to large, almost round and have a dark yellow or orange to red color when ripe. This type of mango originates from Zanzibar and is planted in Lamu, hence the name “Lamu mango”. The fruit is easily recognizable; it is tall, oblong and slender with a very prominent hooked beak at the apex. The fruit turns pale green, developing a beautiful yellow to orange color when ripe. Its intense yellow pulp is of excellent quality, without fibre, and free from fibre, melting, and carries no turpentine taste.

Kent Mango - Mango Kenya

This type of mango is native to Miami, Florida and is sometimes confused with the very similar Keitt farming, the difference being that it ripens earlier (as early as March). The large fruit is greenish-yellow with a red or crimson color on the shoulder. Its shape is regular oval with a rounded base and often with two clear tips. The skin is thick and hard and the small yellow lenticels are numerous; the pulp is succulent, intense yellow in color, melted, without fibers and rich in flavor.

Keitt Mango - Mango Kenya

Originally from Florida. this is an open pollinated Mulgoba seedling. The fruit has exceptional keeping quality and can be left on the trees long after the normal harvest season. It has a greenish yellow color with a pink or red blush and a lavender flower. The shape of the fruit is oval and plump without a beak; has a rounded base. The flesh is dark yellow in color, quite firm, but tender, melted, juicy and with just a little fiber near the seed. The taste is rich and sweet with a pleasant aroma and excellent quality.

It is enjoyed when fully ripe and unripe and pickled when not fully developed. Keitt mangoes have a sweet, fruity flavor with firm, juicy flesh that contains only a limited amount of fiber. Keitt's sleeves are dark to medium green in color, often with a pinkish blush on a small portion of the sleeve. Keitt sleeves are wide and oval.
